Doncaster Stories

Hi all,
Doncaster Literacy Trust are organising some great competitions over the lockdown period.  I think this would be a great opportunity for your child to develop their creative writing skills and their love of reading.
Here is a link to their facebook page - please take a look!

This week the creative writing challenge is set at The Frenchgate Centre!  I could see some amazing creativity from this!  Please encourage your child to take part.  It is such a great opportunity for them.

Happy Writing!

ICT

ICT

Activity 1

Through your online learning, you might be picking up some new technology skills.

Earlier this year, in ICT club, we tried to work on our mouse control and typing skills.

Why don’t you practise as part of your home learning?

Follow the link below to some games you can use to improve your typing skills and speed.

Activity 2

Miss Stavish has also set you a challenge to work through the different levels of Pre-express Code.

This helps improve your coding skills ready for KS2.

Reading Challenge 1

Before school closed we started reading Roald Dahl’s 'George’s Marvellous Medicine'.

Underneath is a poem that George recounts in the story when he decides to make Grandma a new medicine.
Can you read the poem and answer the following questions?

So give me a bug and a jumping flea,
Give me two snails and lizards three,
And a slimy squiggler from the sea,
And the poisonous sting of a bumblebee,
And the juice from the fruit of the ju-jube tree,
And the powered bone of a wombat’s knee.
And one hundred other things as well
Each with rather nasty smell.
I’ll stir them up, I’ll boil them long,
A mixture tough, a mixture strong.
And then, heigh-ho, and down it goes,
A nice big spoonful (hold your nose)
Just gulp it down and have no fear.
“How do you like it, Granny dear?”
Will she go pop? Will she explode?
Will she go flying down the road?
Will she go poof in a puff of smoke?
Start fizzing like a can of coke?
Who knows? Not I. Let’s wait and see.
(I’m glad it’s neither you nor me)
Oh Grandmas, if you only knew

What I have got in store for you!

1)     Can you find two words that rhyme with..?
·        Flea
·        Explode
·        Fear
·        Nose

2)   Can you list 4 things that George plans to add to his medicine?

3)   What adjective describes the sting of a bumblebee?

4)  A nice big spoonful (hold your nose)
Why would the person drinking the medicine need to hold their nose?

5)   How do you think George feels by the end of the poem?

English: Week 2

English Week 2

This week is all about using your imagination and being creative with story writing!

Monday: Lesson 1

LO: To make predictions

Look carefully at the picture and the story starter…

Story starter!
Toby had thought the art gallery a boring place to visit. In fact, he had said as much to his mum as he trudged up the grand, stone steps to the entrance an hour earlier. “Mummmmm” he had complained, “I hate coming here. The animals never dooooo anything.”
Toby was now thinking he had been wrong. His jaw dropped and he stared in utter disbelief at the sight in front of him, pointing as water cascaded onto the floorboards from the painting containing a herd of elephants stampeding through the Ganges river. Toby could not believe his eyes: this trip was starting to get interesting…

Task

Can you record the answer to these questions in your home learning book?

What do you think will happen next?
Which other animals will come to life?
How will Toby react to the situation?
What might the paintings depict in the other rooms around the gallery?
Might this have happened before in the gallery?

Tuesday: Lesson 2

Word level

What are verbs?Watch the video below for an explanation.

3)   What is a verb?
4)  Can you think of three different verbs that you could use instead of ‘trudged’?
