English: Week 4

Week 4 English

We hope you had a lovely weekend staying in with your grown-ups.

We are looking at writing another short story this week based on a fantastic image.

Story starter!
The books had minds of their own…
This was no ordinary library.
Books about knights and castles would gallop all over the library, bravely and boldly ordering the other books around. The books about thieves would sneak around, lurking behind bookshelves in the shadows. Books about wild animals would occasionally roar and bite other books. The ones containing stories set in the winter would often shiver, covering their neighbours with snow and frost.
Lucy loved this place like no other. Reading was the most exciting thing in the world here: everything she read seemed to come alive out of the pages…

Lesson 1
LO: To infer information from an image

There is lots of information you can ‘read’ from an image. They can make you think and open up your imagination.

Task

Can you answer the questions below in your home learning books?
How is this library different from a normal library?
What are you favourite types of books?
If you could choose for one of your books to come alive, which one would it be and why?
If you could be a character in a book, who would you like to be?
If you were to borrow every single book from your local library, would it still be a library?
In your opinion, what makes a good book? Can you come up with a top three favourite authors as a class?

Lesson 2
LO: To use adjectives to describe.

An adjective, as you know, is a describing word.
An expanded noun phrase is typically when we place an adjective (or more than one) in front of a known.

For example, beautiful, blue butterfly.

Task

Can you write 10 expanded noun phrases about the library?

Lesson 3
LO: To edit and improve sentences.

These sentences are ‘sick’.
Some of them need re-writing to improve tense and sense. Others are boring.

Task

Can you use your expanded noun phrases and conjunctions to improve the sentences?

Lucy sat in the chair.

Books went around the big library like flying books.

There was piles of books on the floor like towers.

A girl was reading.

The light was on.

She could see books.

Lesson 4
LO: To plan a story

Tomorrow you are going to write a story.

Remember how important it is to plan our sentences before we start writing them.

Task

Can you create a story map to plan what happens in the library?

Lesson 5

LO: To write a story

What could be in your story writing toolkit?

Writing toolkit

Capital letter and full stops
Expanded noun phrases
Conjunctions
Full sentences
Prepositions
Pre-cursive or cursive handwriting
