English: Week 6

English Week 6

I hope you are enjoying our new text Dolphin Boy!

This week we are going to re-visit a genre we covered with Paddington Bear.

Diaries!

Lesson 1

LO: To understand new vocabulary

This week we are going to be writing a diary entry, as if you were the Dolphin Boy!

Before we start looking at diary entries and what they need to include, I want to set you a vocabulary challenge this week!

Can you include these new words in your learning this week?

Today’s task is all about making sure you understand the word/ phrase.

raggedy
in spite of
hauling
helm
shallows
quay
longed
crammed

Task 1

Can you use a dictionary or online search engine to find the meaning on these words?

Task 2

Can you put them into your own exciting sentences?

Lesson 2

LO: To read as a writer

When we begin our writing, we must think about what our writing needs to include.

Can you discuss these questions with a grown up? Or just have a little think to yourself.

What is a diary? Why do we write them? What are they usually about?

Follow the link to find a video all about diary entries.

Below I have included a diary written by Paddington.
I’m hoping you remember this from school!

5.11.2019

Dear Diary

What a fantastic day I’ve had! I couldn’t believe it when Dad found the strangest bear at the train station.

First, we got him into a huge, black taxi and travelled quickly to our house. The driver was very irate because Paddington got sticky, orange marmalade all over the interior!

When we got home, we tried to give Paddington a bath. What were we thinking? He created a gigantic mess, as water and soap went all over the clean bathroom.

Next it was time for tea. Paddington would only eat marmalade sandwiches. I tried to tell him that they were only for children, but he just ignored me. He cheerfully ate it and then decided he wanted to go to bed!
Once he went to sleep, I finally felt like I could go to sleep. What mischief can we get up to tomorrow?

Micheal

Task

Can you find and record some of the following diary features?

·        Thoughts
·        Feelings
·        First person
·        Exclamation marks
·        Adjectives
·        Conjunctions
·        Adverbs

You can either write a list of what you find, or like at school, highlight the examples you see in the text in different colours.

Lesson 3

LO: To create thoughts and feeling.

We are going to write a diary as if we were Jim from Dolphin boy.
Let’s say that it is the day you discovered Smiler for the first time.

What would your thoughts and feelings be?

Task

Underneath are three parts of the story
Can you write a thought and a feeling for each picture?

Example
Could it have been what I thought it was on the beach?
I felt nervous as I approached the seaweed.

Lesson 4

LO: To plan a diary entry

Remember how important it is to plan our writing before we start!

This helps you get all your amazing ideas down before you start.

Task

For each picture below, can you write 3 bullet points for what you would include in your diary. You can use yesterday’s learning to help you.

It might be
1)    What happened at that part of the day?
2)   How did you feel?
3)   What did you think?

Lesson 5

LO: To write a diary entry

It’s time to write your diary entry.

Remember all the things you can include to make it the best piece of writing ever!

·        Thoughts
·        Feelings
·        First person
·        Exclamation marks
·        Adjectives
·        Conjunctions
·        Adverbs
·        Best handwriting

Don’t forget the vocabulary challenge!

Let’s say you are Jim! Can you write a diary entry to re-tell what happened the day he found Smiler?
